SUMMARY:Peer Support 101
DESCRIPTION:Peer Support 101 is for anyone wanting to know more about Peer Support in Maine. Pre-Requisite to apply to the Maine CIPS training program\n\n\nPeer Support 101\n \n \n Over the last 35 years peer support in mental health has evolved out of a human rights perspective. Even in the late 1970’s\, when most of the mental health community was talking about life long illness and containment in the community\, people working in peer support were talking about rights\, consciousness raising\, alternatives\, and choice. People like Sally Zinman and Howie the Harp were helping people come together to support one another in becoming well and building a life in community. While all this was developing\, so were the ideas about what makes peer support different than other kinds of help. Not better or worse\, but a whole different way of thinking about life and supportive relationships. (Shery Mead\, 2006)\n \n \nPeer Support 101 is an opportunity to take a peek at Intentional Peer Support\, learn about the tasks of peer support and hear about peer support in Maine. Peer Support 101 is a 3-hour class offered to anyone interested in learning more about peer support. It is also a requirement for participation in the Peer Support Specialists Certification\n \n \nWho should take Peer Support 101?\n \n \n Consumers – Provides an opportunity to discover the broad range of peer support. As well as qualify for participation in the Peer Support Specialists Certification.\n \n \nProviders – Peer Support may be something offered in your agency\, or your community\, do you know what its all about? Would you like to know the possibilities?\n \n \nCommunity and Family Members – Find out about options for people you care about.

SUMMARY:LO Boston | In the Slopes with Inclusive Ski Touring
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our first ever skiing / riding event!\n\n\n—–español abajo——————— \n \nBEFORE SIGNING UP PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE DESCRIPTION AND FAQs.\n \nThis event demands complex logistics planning by our staff\, therefore participants must be well-read on what this event is about before reserving a spot. It also is one of our higher cost events (we are paying $100 per person) that we are providing to participants for free\, so ensure you can attend before commiting so someone else doesn’t miss out on a spot.\n\n**LIMITED SPOTS** and **RESERVATIONS WILL CLOSE ON FEB 7**NO EXPERIENCE REQUIRED** \n————————————————————— \nWe are partnering with Inclusive Ski Touring (IST) to bring this activity to our community. This event is fully supported by grant funds from Summits in Solidarity. \n \nGet ready to hit the slopes and experience the thrill of skiing and snowboarding in this stunning location. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a first-timer\, this event offers something for everyone. This event will feature “uphill skiing/split boarding” or “ski touring” in addition to “downhill skiing”\, all in a resort setting. Please read more about Uphill Skiing in our FAQ section to understand what the day will entail. \n \nWHAT: Skiing / Snowboarding in a resort setting (both uphill and dowhill with the option of lift skiing) *gear\, lesson & resort fees included!* \nCOST: Free for all participants \nWHEN: Saturday February 18th\, 8:00am \nWHY: To TAKE UP SPACE with our gente! \nWHO: Skiers and Snowboarders of all levels\, ages 18+ \nWHERE: Mt Abram Ski Resort\, 308 Howe Hill Rd #3112\, Greenwood\, ME 04255 \n \nFAQs\n \nWhat is Uphill Skiing? \nIn short\, you are Uphill Skiing when you use your own skiis or splitboard to “walk” or “hike” up the ski trail to reach the summit instead of taking the mechanical lift\, similarly to what you would do when wearing snowshoes\, except the skis allow you to glide and cover more uphill terrain unlike a snowshoe. \nUphill Skiing\, also referred to as Ski Touring\, Skinning\, Alpine Touring\, Split-Boarding\, and/or Backcountry Skiing is at its basics hiking up the mountain with skis (or a split-board) on your feet with the help of “skins” under your skis and a special ski binding that secures the front of your foot\, but not your heel\, in the uphill movement. The “skin” has a furry side and a sticky side that sticks to the underside of the ski. The furry side is what grips the snow providing traction as you hike up. Imagine that you are hiking up a trail\, but you have skis under your feet and you are pushing the ski forward with the front of your foot . To descend\, you remove the skins from under your skis/snowboard and the binding allows you to secure your heel so you can downhill ski / snowboard back down. Split-Boards are the snowboard version of touring skis; the snowboard splits into two planks with special bindings that rotate. \n \nCheck out THIS VIDEO to get a visual. \n \nI am worried this activity looks too extreme. Can I join even if I haven’t skied / snowboarded before? \nABSOLUTELY! This event is for all experience levels. Believe it or not\, the “Uphill” part of the skiing is not that complex\, it really is just like walking up the hill\, and we will be practicing on beginner\, low-angle slopes. The business is in the downhill and we will have volunteer instructors that will help you learn the basics to descend. \nThis activity can be as easy\, hard\, fast\, or as slow as you want to make it. No one will be left behind. We will also take some time to teach you how to get on the lift in the beginning in case you want to spend the afternoon only lift-skiing and skipping the uphill part. \n \nWhat about fitness level? \nThis program is open to all ability levels but we ask you take your personal fitness and health / any serious health conditions into account. You must be able to walk 1 mile at an incline at a relaxed pace. \n \nI already have skiing experience and feel comfortable going downhill. Is this event for me? \nDEFINITELY! After a first run in the beginner slopes\, participants can split up based on ability level and uphill ski or lift ski to higher summits to descend on more difficult terrain. \n \nWhat is included in this event? \nThis event includes all ski/snowboard gear (ski / snowboard\, specialized boots\, climbing skins\, helmet\, ski poles)\, ski/snowboard instruction/program fees\, lift ticket fee\, and uphill access fee. \n \nI have never skied or snowboarded. Which do you recommend signing up for? \nThis is totally up to you and both are equally fun! Choose what you are most excited about trying. In general\, skiing is easier to learn but harder to master\, and snowboarding is harder to learn but easier to master. This means on your first day as a first-timer\, it is likely you will spend more time falling on a snowboard that skis. But falling is how we learn and yes\, you will probably also fall on skis at some point as a first timer. Folks that have a background in skateboarding or surfing may find snowboarding more welcoming. Follow your heart and if you have any questions please reach out. \n \nHow long does it take to get to the summit and ski back down? \nOn average it will take about 90 minutes to ski uphill to the summit\, transition\, and ski/snowboard back down the mountain. The uphill route we take is approximately 1.4 miles with just over 1000’ of elevation gain. \n \nIt looks like the resort is in Maine\, 3 hrs from Boston. Will you be providing transportation? \nCorrect! This event is in the beautiful state of Maine. Partnering with the organization Inclusive Ski Touring allows us to bring this activity to our Boston community at an affordable price (for us)\, and Mt Abram Ski Resort is ISTs main venue. Unfortunately we can’t provide transportation\, and you will be responsible for finding your own ride. We will share emails amongst participants who have marked in the registration form that they need a ride or can drive others\, but none the less you will be responsible for coordinating this and arriving at Mt Abram at 8am on Saturday Feb 17. \n \nWe suggest getting in touch with other participants and coordinating carpooling the morning of the event\, leaving Boston at 4:30am latest to arrive at 8am. Alternatively\, you can also form a group with other participants to rent an AirBnB or stay at an inn the night before from prices ranging from ~$80-$200/night. \n \nI don’t have ski gear. Where can I get some? \nThat’s totally ok. Answer the questions in the registration form and we will use that to reserve the appropriate uphill ski / snowboard gear for you. In the event that uphill gear is not available\, we will reserve downhill ski / snowboard gear for you\, teach you how to get on the lift if needed\, and meet you at the top of the lift line to help you descend the trail if you need instruction. \n \nWhat should I wear? \nPlease refer to THIS GUIDE to help you get appropriate clothing for this event. And PLEASE DO NOT WEAR COTTON! If you are having trouble procuring the clothing needed after reading this guide\, please reach out to us and we will help you. \n \nWhat should I bring? \nCheck out this GEAR LIST for a complete list of everything you should bring\, from layers\, to sunscreen. \n \nWhy is Latino Outdoors Boston running a skiing event? \nLatines and other underserved communities have been historically excluded from “white” hobbies such as skiing/snowboarding\, due to racism\, xenophobia\, and socio-economic barriers. Simply put\, skiing and snowboarding are prohibitely expensive\, and acquiring the knowledge is also expensive as you likely need to pay for multiple lessons even if you have the gear. \n \nOn average\, a new full ski/ snowboard kit (ski/snowboard\, bindings\, boots\, ski poles\, helmet) will cost around $1000\, apparel (base layers\, mid layers\, outer layers\, gloves\, hat) will cost around $600\, one lesson around $150\, a one-day lift ticket $100\, plus gas and or lodging at the ski area\, we are talking a total of thousands of dollars just to “try” a new activity. \n \nOur aim at Latino Outdoors is to build community in the outdoors\, provide safe spaces to share our cultura and convivir with nature\, and decrease the access barriers to these activities\, becase we ALL deserve to be outside with our gente. Partnering with IST has allowed our chapter to have access to their structured program and low cost program package ($100 for all gear and fees/pp)\, which we are ecstatic to bring to you\, our community\, free of charge. No dejaremos atras a nadie. \n¡DEFINITIVAMENTE! \n \nNunca he esquiado ni practicado snowboard.

SUMMARY:iNSPiRE Wellness
DESCRIPTION:Recognizing the Signs & Symptoms of Dysfunctional & Sleep Disordered Breathing in a Busy Dental Office\n\n\nDysfunctional breathing is common and affects more than we realize. What if empowering your patients to make small changes to something they do all day every day could potentially make big changes to their oral and overall health? As oral health and wellness practitioners\, we are in an ideal position to not only recognize the signs and symptoms of dysfunctional breathing\, but to begin to share the knowledge on how to correct it. Once you know what you are looking for\, all it takes is making small changes to things that you are already doing in your office all day every day to begin inspiring wellness. Imagine how you could help patients get the healthy smiles of their dreams when you are no longer chasing disease. What you already love to do has the potential to become more predictable and rewarding when you are recognizing and addressing the root cause of disease first. Are you ready to get started?

In August of 2023 Michael lost his fight with addiction while at living at his sober house in Virginia\, but before his battle ended he had made a promise to his little brother Ryder\, that they would ride to Deboullie Mountain when he came back home during his little brother’s school vacation in February.
