Healthcare Challenges for the LGBTQ+ Community

Jun 26, 2023 | Benefits, General, Wellness | 0 comments

Navigating the US healthcare system can be a daunting task for anyone, but it can be especially challenging for those who identify as LGBTQ+. Discrimination, lack of understanding, and limited access to appropriate care are just a few of the challenges that LGBTQ+ individuals may face when seeking healthcare services.

According to a report by the National LGBT Health Education Center, LGBTQ+ individuals are more likely to experience health disparities and face barriers to accessing healthcare services. These disparities can be attributed to a variety of factors, including discrimination, lack of cultural competency among healthcare providers, and limited access to healthcare services.

One of the ways that LGBTQ+ individuals can navigate these challenges is by seeking out complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) services. CAM services are non-traditional healthcare practices that can be used in conjunction with traditional medical treatments. These services can include acupuncture, massage therapy, herbal medicine, and more.

One example of a CAM service that may be beneficial for LGBTQ+ individuals is acupuncture. Acupuncture has been shown to be effective in treating a variety of health conditions, including chronic pain, anxiety, and depression. It can also be used to help manage the side effects of traditional medical treatments, including many pharmaceuticals, surgery, and even chemotherapy.

Another example of a CAM service that may be beneficial for LGBTQ+ individuals is massage therapy. Massage therapy has been shown to be effective in reducing stress and anxiety, improving sleep quality, and reducing pain. It can also be used to help manage the symptoms of chronic conditions, such as fibromyalgia and arthritis.

It is important to note that while CAM services can be beneficial for LGBTQ+ individuals, they should not be considered as a viable alternative to improving the level of care available to these citizens through our current healthcare infrastructure. We must continue to push healthcare leadership and challenge policies that prevent health equity and impede the LGBTQ+ community from receiving the best possible care.

In addition to seeking out CAM services, there are other steps that LGBTQ+ individuals can take to navigate the challenges of the US healthcare system. These steps include:

1. Finding a healthcare provider who is knowledgeable about LGBTQ+ health issues and is culturally competent.

2. Learning about advocating for yourself and your healthcare needs. This can include asking questions, expressing your concerns, and being assertive about your healthcare needs. There are many free online resources that provide helpful framework and training on being your own healthcare advocate.

3. Seeking out support from LGBTQ+ organizations and communities. These organizations can provide resources and support to help you navigate the healthcare system.

4. Educating yourself about your healthcare rights and the resources available to you. This can include researching healthcare laws and regulations, as well as seeking out information about healthcare services and providers in your area.

Navigating the US healthcare system as an LGBTQ+ identifying person can be challenging and frustrating. While we work together toward a more equitable and inclusive healthcare system, there are steps that can be taken to partially overcome these challenges.

Seeking out CAM services, finding a knowledgeable healthcare provider, advocating for yourself, seeking out support from LGBTQ+ organizations, and educating yourself about your healthcare rights and resources can all make a short term impact on the quality of care you receive. While the challenges and barriers of our current healthcare system remain, especially in certain parts of our country, these steps can help empower individuals to take control of their own health and create a health management strategy that best fits their individual needs.
